A Mustard Jelly is a creature found in various editions of Dungeons & Dragons, typically categorized as an ooze or slime-type monster. It resembles a large, quivering mass of translucent yellow-green goo and is often mistaken for other slimes or jellies, but it has distinct characteristics that make it more dangerous than it appears.

This creature is typically used by dungeon designers and DMs as a trap or a guardian, often hiding in plain sight as a puddle or clinging to walls or ceilings, waiting for adventurers to get close. Its coloration gives it a sickly, mustard-like appearance, hence the name. While it may seem mindless like most oozes, some versions of the Mustard Jelly show a degree of intelligence or at least cunning, particularly in its ability to ambush or split itself into multiple parts during combat.

In combat, a Mustard Jelly is known for its resistance and immunities. It is immune to many forms of attack, particularly those based on acid and electricity, which can pass through it without causing harm. In earlier editions of the game, it was also known to split into two smaller jellies if struck by lightning attacks, making it even more dangerous if adventurers use the wrong tactics. Physical attacks can harm it, but its amorphous form makes it resistant to being grappled or restrained. It can also squeeze through small openings, making it hard to trap or contain.

A Mustard Jelly attacks by engulfing its prey, dealing acid damage and potentially suffocating smaller creatures. In some iterations, it exudes a paralytic secretion, rendering foes helpless before it begins to digest them. Since it's often encountered in dark, dungeon-like environments where movement is limited, a Mustard Jelly can quickly become a major threat, especially if players are unprepared or unaware of its specific resistances.

The Mustard Jelly's presence in a dungeon often implies magical or alchemical tampering, as it's not typically found in nature. Some lore suggests they are created through magical experiments or are spawned in areas rich with necromantic or alchemical residue. Whether guarding treasure or simply roaming for food, Mustard Jellies add an element of tactical danger that challenges both experienced and novice adventurers.
