In Dungeons & Dragons, a Nanoshard Swarm is a swarm of small, metallic fragments known as nanoshards. These shards are typically the remnants of powerful, arcane-infused devices or ancient technology. The swarm is often encountered in settings where technology and magic intersect, such as in futuristic or steampunk-themed campaigns. The nanoshards are usually sentient or are controlled by an intelligence, making them more than mere mechanical debris. They can be highly dangerous to adventurers, as they move in a fluid, unpredictable manner, overwhelming enemies through sheer numbers and precision.

A Nanoshard Swarm is capable of rapidly dispersing across the battlefield, cutting through armor and flesh with razor-sharp edges. The swarm often functions as a living entity, using its cohesion to avoid being easily dispersed or attacked. Its small, floating fragments can weave in and out of combat, making it difficult for opponents to target individual pieces. This characteristic allows the swarm to harass and inflict damage over time, constantly adjusting its formation to keep its foes off balance.

The swarm's unique nature may make it resistant to typical weaponry, such as swords or arrows, but it could be vulnerable to spells that disrupt the swarm's cohesion or target its intelligence, like area-of-effect magic or abilities that control swarms. In combat, the Nanoshard Swarm is a terrifying force, capable of draining hit points quickly as it latches onto enemies, tearing through them with relentless precision. The sight of the swarm can be unsettling, with its constant motion and the hum of shifting metal creating an atmosphere of mechanical chaos that adds an eerie element to encounters.
