It is a manifestation of the Eldrazi corruption, born from the unnatural energies that seep from these ancient, alien beings into the environment. Appearing as a viscous, black liquid that writhes and bubbles with sentient malice, a Roiling Oil is not a creature in the traditional sense, but rather an ooze-like extension of the blight left by the Eldrazi titans. It exudes a corrupting aura and is drawn to living things, consuming flesh and matter indiscriminately.

Although mindless, it is far from passive. Driven by a primal urge to spread its oily mass and dissolve anything in its path, the Roiling Oil creeps and lashes out with pseudopods of sludge. Mechanically, it resembles a black pudding or other oozes found in the Monster Manual, but with a thematic twist unique to the Zendikar setting. A Roiling Oil often signals the spread of greater corruption, acting as a herald or symptom of a deeper, more dangerous infestation. It embodies the invasive, inescapable dread that the Eldrazi bring, making even a small encounter with it a chilling portent of worse things to come.
