The Shambling Guardian is a creature that appears in Dungeons & Dragons, most notably featured in The Wild Beyond the Witchlight, an adventure set in the whimsical yet eerie domain of Prismeer in the Feywild. It is a variant of the classic shambling mound, a creature originally introduced in earlier editions of D&D. While a standard shambling mound is a hulking mass of animated vegetation, the Shambling Guardian is enhanced with enchantments that make it an even more formidable and specialized sentinel.

In terms of lore, Shambling Guardians are typically created through powerful druidic or fey magic to act as protectors of sacred groves, enchanted glades, or the domains of powerful fey beings. These creatures are not natural but rather constructs formed from plant matter animated by magic and bound with a singular purpose: defense. Their forms are roughly humanoid but composed of vines, moss, roots, and decaying vegetation that continually regrows and shifts, making them appear nearly impervious to harm. They exude a strong presence in the Feywild, often tied to a specific location or being, and can remain dormant for centuries until activated.

Mechanically, a Shambling Guardian retains many traits of its shambling mound counterpart, such as immunity to lightning damage and the ability to engulf and suffocate enemies within its body. However, it also possesses unique abilities or enhancements that set it apart, such as spell-like resistances or increased control over its territory. These added features make it not just a brute force creature but a tactical one that poses a serious challenge to adventurers.

As guardians of enchanted places, Shambling Guardians often serve as the final test for those attempting to intrude upon sacred sites. They are unrelenting and lack personal will, acting solely under the orders or enchantments that created them. In narrative terms, they symbolize the wild, uncaring power of nature when harnessed as a weapon.
