This is a Highly detailed miniature of a Water Bear.

This model was created by Schlossbauer who makes amazingly accurate models of the Monster Manual creatures and provided by Commercial Licence.

In Dungeons & Dragons, a Water Bear—sometimes referred to as a “Tardigrade”—is a rare and unusual creature inspired by the real-world microscopic animal known for its resilience in extreme conditions. While not typically part of the core bestiaries like the Monster Manual, Water Bears occasionally appear in third-party content, homebrew campaigns, or as magical constructs and aberrations in experimental or planar adventures. When adapted for D&D, a Water Bear is usually not a literal, microscopic creature, but a magically enlarged and often mutated version, sometimes growing to the size of a horse or larger, especially if exposed to arcane or extraplanar influences.

In these depictions, Water Bears are often treated as otherworldly or elemental beings—particularly tied to the Plane of Water or the Far Realm. They are typically described as squat, segmented creatures with eight stubby legs, each tipped with small claws, and a tubular, lamprey-like mouth. Due to their strange biology, they are frequently immune or resistant to many environmental hazards such as vacuum, pressure, or radiation-like magical effects. This makes them excellent guardians of arcane laboratories, extraplanar research stations, or deep-sea ruins. Some versions include psychic variants, suggesting an alien intelligence within their plodding forms.

Mechanically, a Water Bear in D&D may possess resistance or immunity to poison, cold, or force damage, and abilities that allow them to survive in environments that would normally be fatal to others. They may have unique traits such as “Temporal Suspension,” which allows them to enter a hibernation state to avoid damage, or “Arcane Absorption,” letting them feed on ambient magical energy. In narrative terms, Water Bears can be used as strange, awe-inspiring curiosities, subjects of magical research, or even unlikely familiars or mounts for eccentric wizards.

Whether encountered as bizarre wildlife, magical accidents, or eldritch entities, Water Bears add a sense of wonder and weirdness to any campaign.
