A Zombie Cat in Dungeons & Dragons is an example of a creature that combines the eerie charm of a household pet with the unnatural horror of undeath. Though not a standard monster in most core rulebooks, it often appears in homebrew content or themed adventures where necromancy runs rampant. Typically, a Zombie Cat is the reanimated corpse of a domesticated feline, brought back through dark magic or necrotic energy. While far from a major threat, its presence can be unnerving, especially when it retains vestiges of its former personality.
In terms of mechanics, a Zombie Cat would function similarly to a Tiny undead creature with stats akin to a regular cat, but modified to reflect its undead nature. This means it would lose any natural Dexterity-based agility and instead gain resistance to necrotic damage and immunity to poison and charm effects. Its behavior might be erratic—half-feral, twitchy, or disturbingly affectionate in a parody of its living self. Some versions are described as falling apart at the seams, their glowing eyes and stiff movements making them more unsettling than dangerous.
Zombie Cats are usually not encountered alone in combat unless as part of a swarm or controlled by a necromancer or dark druid. They serve well as familiars for villainous spellcasters or as flavor elements in haunted locations, acting more as atmospheric tools than significant combatants. In roleplay-heavy campaigns, they can also introduce moral quandaries, particularly if the cat was once beloved by a party member or a local NPC.
Narratively, the Zombie Cat can be used to add both horror and dark humor. Seeing a once-loved pet rise from the grave can be tragic, pitiful, or deeply disturbing. In some cases, they may even retain some memory of their past life, curling up next to a familiar bed or meowing silently for food, offering a macabre glimpse into the emotional weight of undeath.
