A Zombie Deinonychus in Dungeons & Dragons is an undead version of the swift, cunning predator known as the deinonychus, which itself is a dinosaur-like creature resembling a large raptor. In life, a deinonychus is agile, vicious, and known for its pack tactics and deadly claws. When raised from the dead through necromantic magic, however, it loses all intelligence and instinct, becoming a shambling, relentless horror.
The Zombie Deinonychus is animated through spells such as Animate Dead or similar necromantic rituals. It retains the basic physical form of the original creature, including its long sickle-shaped talons and powerful limbs, but its flesh is decayed, its eyes glow with unnatural energy, and its movements are more rigid and halting. Though it no longer has the coordination or speed of its living counterpart, it remains a terrifying force due to its size, strength, and resilience. The undead version is slower and incapable of tactics, but it never tires, cannot feel pain, and follows its master’s commands without hesitation.
These creatures are typically used by necromancers, death cults, or evil druids who have found or preserved dinosaur corpses in jungles or ancient ruins. In settings like Chult from Tomb of Annihilation, where dinosaurs are common, undead versions can be encountered stalking the jungle, often patrolling the domain of an evil force. Unlike the living deinonychus, which might flee or hunt strategically, the zombie version simply attacks the nearest creature until destroyed or ordered otherwise.
Mechanically, Zombie Deinonychuses are often treated as custom monsters—either a deinonychus with the Zombie template applied or a stat block drawn from supplements like Tomb of Annihilation. They combine the base stats of the dinosaur with the traits of the undead, such as immunity to poison and the ability to keep fighting past death through the Undead Fortitude trait, making them unsettling opponents for adventurers in grim, necromantic adventures.
