Long-eared Owl hueforge
The Long-eared Owl, known scientifically as Asio otus, is a medium-sized owl species distinguished by its striking ear tufts, which are not actually ears but elongated feathers used for camouflage and communication. These tufts stand upright when the bird is alert or threatened, helping it blend seamlessly into tree bark by breaking up the outline of its head. The true ears are located asymmetrically on the sides of the head, a feature that allows for exceptional directional hearing, enabling the owl to locate prey even in total darkness.
This owl has a slender body, long wings, and a rounded head. Its plumage is mottled in shades of brown, buff, and grey, creating a cryptic pattern that provides excellent camouflage in wooded environments. The facial disc is pale orange-brown with a darker rim, and the large, forward-facing eyes are a deep orange, giving the owl a piercing and intelligent appearance. In flight, the Long-eared Owl appears graceful and buoyant, with silent wingbeats that make it an efficient nocturnal hunter.
