The Silken Windhound is a graceful, medium-sized sighthound known for its elegance, speed, and affectionate temperament. Developed in the late twentieth century in the United States, this breed was created by crossing Borzois with Whippets and other small sighthounds to produce a dog that combined the refinement and beauty of larger hounds with the agility and manageable size of smaller ones. Its name reflects both its appearance and nature: “Silken” refers to the soft, flowing coat, while “Windhound” emphasizes its heritage as a swift coursing dog bred for running and chasing by sight rather than scent. 

A Silken Windhound typically stands between 18 and 24 inches tall and has a lightweight, athletic build designed for speed and endurance. Its coat is long, fine, and silky to the touch, often forming feathering around the legs, chest, and tail, and comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns, from solid shades to striking brindles and parti-colors. The head is narrow and refined with expressive, almond-shaped eyes that give the dog an intelligent and gentle expression. The ears are small and folded back when relaxed but may lift slightly when the dog is alert.
